Bat Snails at Festac Grill

Bah-oh ‘Nauts,

Can you believe that in all our dozens of dinners we’ve only had African food twice? It’s criminal. Speaking of which, have you ever been to lovely East New York? Well, that’s where we’re headed — specifically, to the amazing Festac Grill, which we’re taking over next Tuesday evening.

The food is spicy and fantastic — this place bills itself as “Original African Cuisine: Home Food Away from Home” — so come prepared to drink Guinness and eat with your hands, like the locals do. Once again, we’ve convinced the lovely owner and chef to go off the menu for us, and they’ll be cooking up snails, tripe, and a host of goat parts to compliment what will surely be an epic feast. On top of everything, it’s easy to get to, only 2 (slightly dicey) blocks from the J/Z at Van Siclen, just off Atlantic Avenue. Just look for the painted African masks on the awning and the black-out windows — but trust us, it’s welcoming and warm inside. The afrobeat will be kicking, we’ll have some Nollywood action flicks playing on the TV, and you will be wiping the sweat from your forehead with your sticky fufu-encrusted hands before you know what hit you.
